What is Lymphatic Drainage?

Lymphatic drainage is one of the absolute best things you can do for your face, and your health.

This gentle, non-invasive technique offers myriad beauty and health benefits that go beyond just looking good—it will make you feel incredible, too. Lymphatic drainage is integral to your body’s detoxification, and your whole health. Poor lymphatic flow is at the core of many health conditions.

The lymphatic system doesn’t have a built-in “pump” like the circulatory system. Lymphatic flow is governed by movement, which means tension and periods of stillness cause lymphatic stagnation. This leaves us feeling groggy and sluggish, and looking puffy and dull.

60-70% of the body’s lymph nodes are in the face and neck, so a face routine that prioritizes lymphatic drainage can improve your whole-body health, AND give you instant aesthetic benefits.

So what exactly is lymphatic drainage, and why has it become a must-have in skincare routines across the globe?

Beauty Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage

1. Reduces Puffiness and Swelling

One of the most immediate benefits of lymphatic drainage is its ability to reduce puffiness and swelling, particularly around the eyes and cheeks. As we manually move and drain lymph, it  moves excess fluid out of the tissues and into the lymph nodes, where it can be filtered and eliminated from the body.

2. Prevents sagging and double chin

Lymph can pool in certain areas, like under the chin, which can cause the skin to stretch and sag over time. By maintaining healthy lymphatic flow and drainage, you can prevent and reduce these symptoms over time.

3. Enhances Skin Tone and Firmness

Regular lymphatic drainage can improve skin tone and firmness by increasing blood circulation. Improved circulation delivers more oxygen and nutrients to the skin cells, promoting healthier, more vibrant skin. This leads to more elasticity, volume, and sculpture of your face.

4. Promotes a Healthy Glow and Hydrated Skin

The removal of toxins and improved circulation also contributes to a natural, healthy glow. When your skin is free from congestion and adequately nourished, it reflects light better, giving you that coveted dewy radiant look.

5. Minimizes Lines and Wrinkles

Lymphatic drainage can help minimize the appearance of lines and wrinkles. By keeping the skin hydrated and supple, this technique helps to maintain its plumpness and elasticity. The increased circulation ensures that your skin is well-nourished which slows down the skin’s aging process.

Health Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage

1. Boosts Immune System

Since the lymphatic system plays a crucial role in immune function, improving its flow can help strengthen your body’s defenses against infections. Regular lymphatic drainage routines keep your lymphatic system running efficiently, reducing your susceptibility to colds and other illnesses.

2. Promotes Detoxification and Reduces Inflammation

Lymphatic drainage helps your body get rid of toxins more effectively. This leads to improved overall health, as the removal of these toxins can reduce the burden on other organs like the liver and kidneys, allowing them to function more efficiently. It can also lead to improvements in inflammatory skin conditions like rosacea, acne, and eczema when practiced safely, but this may require a little more guidance and caution.

3. Reduces Stress and Anxiety

The soothing nature of lymphatic drainage has a calming effect on the mind and body. The lymphatic system is closely intertwined with the fascia, and both play a part in the nervous system's fight or flight/rest and digest responses. Regular lymphatic drainage can support healthy vagal tone, reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of calm. Lymphatic work helps to release tension, reduce stress, and promote relaxation, making it an excellent addition to any self-care routine.

How to Incorporate Lymphatic Drainage into Your Routine

Lymphatic drainage can be done professionally by a licensed esthetician or massage therapist, or you can learn to perform it on your own at home. There are numerous ways to do DIY lymphatic drainage, and here are some great ones:

1. Dry brushing

You can do whole-body dry brushing, or just facial dry brushing. Given that 60-70% of the body’s lymph nodes are in the head, neck, and face, facial dry brushing is an integral (and often neglected) part of an effective lymphatic drainage routine. Dry brushing can provide instant de-puffing, radiance, and glow to the skin, plus an instant energy boost, allowing you to focus and function better throughout your day.

2. Facial cupping

Facial cupping increases lymphatic flow dramatically, making it perfect for de-puffing and radiance. Especially after periods of being sedentary or having a late night with too much wine! Practicing facial cupping consistently smooths deep lines, releases facial tension, plumps your skin, and prevents undesirable changes such as the dreaded “double chin”.

3. Facial massage

Manual facial massage is maybe my favorite way to dramatically boost lymphatic drainage. With the high number of lymph nodes in the head, face, and neck, it’s important to know the most efficient and effective way to get lymph moving. Following a facial massage routine specifically made to facilitate lymphatic drainage can give you both instant and long-term benefits, providing an instant glow while restoring your vibrance and facial dimension over time. You can smooth and prevent lines, plump skin, and release the tension that causes the face to sag over time.

All of these techniques tend to follow a similar pattern of stimulating major lymph nodes, and sweeping lymph from the centre of the face outward. With massage, you can get a little more targeted and specific, which can improve results even more.

Do gua sha and jade rollers work for lymphatic drainage?

Gua sha and jade rollers are often touted as ideal tools for facial lymphatic drainage, and they do provide benefit when used correctly. However, results are limited compared to techniques like cupping and facial massage, and there is a lot of poor technique taught across the internet which can create additional concerns. While these are relatively safe and easy ways to stimulate lymphatic drainage, and they work well for prevention, the results are minor, and they don’t help address active concerns like deep lines.

Conclusion

Lymphatic drainage is more than just a beauty trend; it's a powerful technique that transforms your skin and health.
